ASKED QUESTIONS:
Why
would a School Social Worker contact a parent?
1.
School Social Workers contact parents to discuss many types of
concerns including:
attendance problems; academic difficulties; emotional and
behavior difficulties; and missing signatures on official
documents.
2.
To serve as a liaison between home and school
–
School Social Workers assess problems impacting a
student’s achievement and family involvement at
school. The
goal is to help remove barriers to healthy progress and to help
support academic success.
3.
To complete
student evaluations and observations -
School Social Workers are part of the Children At Risk in
Education (C.A.R.E.) Team at each school and may be asked to
complete evaluations when students are experiencing
academic/behavioral/emotional difficulties.
4.
To complete a parent conference
when there are
barriers (transportation/employment commitments) to
parents coming to the school for a conference.
5.
When the student is experiencing attendance problems –
this can include excused or unexcused absences, chronic tardiness and
truancy.
6.
To obtain required signatures
on official
documents and forms.
What
happens when a family is experiencing problems?
School Social
Workers can assist with referrals to community resources
such as
financial assistance, food, clothing, school supplies, housing,
medical, etc.
Why
do Social Workers need to verify the home address and phone
number?
By law, parents
must provide the school the most recent address and phone
numbers in case of an emergency. Students must attend their
districted school unless they are approved through “School
Choice” or county reassignment.
